Chapter

Eleven

The rest of the dinner proceeds with a selection of delicious deserts, and I have to admit Elsa is an amazing cook, even if she is grumpy.

Every time Finn glances at me, I have to fight a blush. Nothing escapes my sisters, and as the group exits the dining room to get their gift bags, they all try to pull me aside and ask questions. Matilda simply watches me with a knowing expression. Unfortunately, I don’t make it to the atrium to get pictures of the orchid.

The bargain I struck with Finn involves a trade—ball invitations in exchange for the favor of walking me home.

After passing out the gift bags, I let my sisters know I won’t be chauffeuring them home. Matilda takes the keys and they give me wicked grins as they say goodnight to Ms. Starling and leave.

The air is crisp and cool as we walk away from Millionaires Row toward downtown. I’m cursing Zelle's shoes, as my feet are killing me, but the pain is simply background noise because I’m happily focused on Finn and the beautiful night sky.

I also have a job to do, so after enjoying a brief comfortable silence, I bring up Elsa. “Has the chef been with your mom long?”

Holding my hand, he shoots me a look from the corner of his eye. “A while, why?”

“She’s an amazing cook. I haven’t eaten that well in years.”

Ruby’s good and she makes a lot of meals, but I long for the days when our mom would get in the kitchen and create the most delicious masterpieces. I’m sure she used magick to help, but I’ve never been able to replicate any of her recipes. She never followed any or wrote her versions down. “I can barely boil water and not burn toast,” I admit. “I’m in awe of anyone who can cook even mildly well.”

His fingers tighten on mine. “I can handle the basics, and Mother can actually do pretty darn well. She just chooses to have a chef on staff.”

“Did you know anything about an argument between Rowena and Janice? I think it had to do with Janice’s clothes or something.”

Our stroll comes to a stop and he turns to me. “Never heard about it. Did Rowena tell you that?”

I shake my head. “Elsa mentioned it tonight in the ballroom. We were discussing the fact your mom decided to still have the auction and dance.”

He looks uncomfortable, and I want to kick myself when he releases my hand. “Staff problems are always an issue. Elsa wasn’t happy when Mother moved here, and she’s a bit bossy, if you haven’t noticed. Rowena was also upset about the relocation. I can’t tell you how many maids, cooks, and gardeners my mom has gone through over the years.”

That brings up another person I haven’t investigated. “The gardener, what was his name?”

I can tell Finn is beginning to wonder what I’m up to. “Jackson.”

Right. I’d forgotten. “So he takes care of the atrium, as well as the gardens and yard?”

“Why all the questions?”

Yep he’s onto me.
